Reception Take on Sports Day and an Australian Crocodile

We’re going on a croc hunt!

The Reception children have braved the wilds of Australia this week on the hunt for a crocodile with big, yellow eyes and sharp, pointy teeth. It has been a super opportunity for the children to compare the physical geography of our country with that of Australia and learn the different names for features such as swamps, scrub and waterholes. The children collaborated to make up their own actions to the story and we enjoyed a whole class retelling.

In maths, we have been learning about time and the children enjoyed using the sand timers to see what they could accomplish in 1 minute. The results were impressive with 100 star jumps, a long ‘snake’ of unifix cubes across the classroom and writing their names 20 times! They have also made their own clocks and can confidently tell the time to o’clock and half past.

On Wednesday all of the children were athletic superstars in our Sports Day – it was so wonderful to see their obvious enjoyment and to be able to celebrate the progress they have made with their fitness and motor development this year.

Our Australia workshop on Friday was incredible and Chris, the Didgeridoo Man, held the children captivated with his Aboriginal stories. They learned how to play the didgeridoo, expressed themselves through dance to accompany Australian music and folk tales and then created some beautiful pieces of land art. It was a magical day where we felt we truly entered the ‘dreamtime’ when Aboriginal culture believes that all things were created.
