Speech and Drama
For those pupils wishing to go beyond the curriculum we offer Speech and Drama lessons as an optional extra. It is a subject which can benefit children of all abilities, developing self-confidence, self-discipline and creativity. It can extend the most able, as well as offering less academic children an opportunity to excel.
Speech & Drama Lessons
Hazlegrove offers weekly Speech & Drama lessons for children who enjoy acting, would like to be confident speakers and develop presentation skills – all whilst having great fun! Emma de la Poer, a fully qualified drama teacher with over 20 years’ experience, teaches small groups and individuals for ten weeks per term and children may enroll at any time.
Confidence
Suitable for all academic and English speaking abilities, Speech & Drama gives all children opportunities to shine as they develop communication skills, learn presentation techniques and build confidence.
Communication
Speech & Drama teaches children to appreciate, understand and develop powerful vocal clarity, expression and projection. Children learn how different words, intonation, body language, movement and stance affect and reinforce spoken communication.
Life Skills
Children learn a framework of valuable skills that helps them excel at school and throughout their lives. These will help them perform successfully at interviews, meetings, social and formal occasions as well as when speaking, acting or performing in public.
Qualifications
Children from year 5 to 8 take two LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts) examinations at the end of the Autumn and Summer terms in Verse & Prose, Spoken English, Reading For Performance, Devised Performance, Acting and Mime. Years 2 to 4 take one examination in the Summer term. We achieve excellent results at Hazlegrove with LAMDA accredited higher grades recognised by UCAS for UK university entrance.
Scholarships
Speech & Drama scholarship students are additionally offered individual coaching to help win both Drama and all-round scholarships
Commitment
Pupils must show commitment in lessons, to their partners and when preparing for LAMDA examinations. If children do not want to take exams this should be confirmed upon enrolment since LAMDA examination forms are submitted six weeks beforehand and so that tuition groups are organised accordingly.
Showcase
Children really enjoy performing in front of their classmates, family and friends. We hold a showcase performance during the Spring term when children perform their LAMDA examination pieces and to which parents, family and friends are all invited.
