Gareth was born, raised and educated in Wales. After graduating, he was recruited to British Steel at Cargo Fleet on Teesside, but quickly realised that a career selling steel was not for him. He returned to university to do a PGCE and discovered that teaching fitted him like a glove.
He started his teaching career at Denstone College in Staffordshire and moved to King's Bruton in 1988 to be Head of Economics & Politics. He was Deputy Head at King's between 1996 and 2015 and retired in 2017. He is married to Jillian, who also taught at King's and they are the parents of two OBs.
His passion is rugby union (he has retired from the game), but he also enjoys travelling abroad at off-peak times and singing with Wincanton Choral Society. An hispanophile, he has been learning Spanish since retirement. He also loves his garden and pulling on his walking boots.
For the last four years he has been the Hon Sec and a trustee of two local charities.
