Pre-Prep Music and Drama
Great Stories begin with Creativity...
At Hazlegrove, Music and Drama form a wonderfully enriching and crucial part of every child’s education. Curriculum music is taught from Nursery, with all children in the early years receiving inspiring and engaging music lessons every week. Lessons focus on sounds through multi-sensory, structured and sequential learning. By Year 2, children have developed a great awareness of pitch and rhythm, they can can sing in harmony and play basic patterns on instruments.
The Music Curriculum:
Our music curriculum has been designed to support the extra-curricular learning of instruments as children move through the school. Children are introduced to our Music School through clubs from Year 1, where they can learn the basics of keyboards and classroom instruments, as well as sing in our pre-prep choir. Once children reach Year 2, they receive a full term of class violin lessons with one of our specialist teachers, it is always such an exciting time for the children.
Individual lessons with one of our 18 visiting instrumental teachers are available to Pre-Prep children as soon as they can manage 1-to-1 sessions. Pupils are encouraged to explore a variety of different options through our instrument trials, with opportunities for learning the piano, singing and a wide variety of orchestral instruments, as well as the drums, guitar, bagpipes and even DJing. We firmly believe that there is an instrument for everybody!
Those who learn an instrument (including during class music lessons), as well as those who sing in our choir, perform to parents and friends in our termly Pre-Prep concerts. We are always very proud of the standard of our young musicians!
Encouraging our young thespians!
Drama, too, forms a vital part of every Pre-Prep child’s Hazlegrove experience.
Weekly lessons are taught by our Head of Drama, who also plays a supporting role in all Pre-Prep productions. Our Pre-Prep productions provide opportunities for all children to experience performing to a rapt audience in our main theatre. Costumes and lighting are de rigeur, aiding our young actors in the display of key early skills, focus and confidence that will be developed further as they move through the school.
