It's been all about maps and treasure in the Ladybird and Butterfly room this week!

The children have been creating some wonderful maps with some extraordinary scenarios, from pirate gobbling seagulls to swirly, whirly thunderstorms and hungry lions, the mission to find the treasure was certainly a challenge! On Tuesday, we put on our pirate outfits and set sail for treasure island. The children followed a map of familiar landmarks to help them collect golden coins which led them to a treasure chest! This inspired the children to play their own treasure island games in the small world tray and create their own maps. Towards the end of week, we looked at mermaids, focusing on the scales and patterns on their tails. We drew around the children and they designed some life size mermaid tails which looked beautiful!

We also enjoyed celebrating World Bee Day on Monday during Forest school. The children made their own log waggle bees, made floral tea in the bee banquet station and enjoyed toasting crumpets on the fire to eat with a topping of honey. Delicious!

During the final week before half term, the Dragonflies continued to explore the ocean by reading ‘The Rainbow Fish’. They began the week by making up actions to use when re-telling the story of the Rainbow Fish. The children practised using a range of story language such as, ‘once upon a time’ and ‘finally’. Later in the week, the children put these skills to good use when acting out the Rainbow Fish story and creating their own rainbow fish book to take home and read to their families.

The Dragonflies practised their number skills by recognising numbers to 10 and counting out the corresponding number of scales. They then stuck the scales onto a fish template to create a beautiful rainbow fish.

During music, the children have been exploring under the sea songs and have been learning to sing ‘There’s a hole in the bottom of the sea’. The Dragonflies have continued to practise this song throughout the week and have enjoyed performing it to their teachers in the classroom. The Dragonflies had a treat this week during forest school as they ate some delicious pancakes and drunk hot chocolate by the fire.
