A week of light and colour in Nursery
After an exciting week of fireworks, the Dragonflies continued to explore the wonderful sparks that light up our sky through Diwali activities.
Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The children and their grandparents enjoyed making colourful rangoli patterns, clay lamps and sparkly firework pictures. They also listened to the story of Rama and Sita and learned about the customs and traditions of Diwali.
Nursery began their Diwali celebrations with their Grandparents at the tea party on Monday, where they made their very own lanterns. It was lovely to see so many smiley faces. The Dragonflies continued their Diwali celebrations by creating their own colourful decorations to hang from the ceiling along with modelling a Diya lamp from clay. A Diya lamp is a small oil lamp that is lit during Diwali to symbolise the victory of light over darkness. The children also learned how to make a flower garland, which is a common decoration in India.
The Ladybird and Butterfly room has been aglow with light as the children found out about Diwali. We read a story to find out how Diwali is celebrated and learnt a new song. The children then found a source of a light and learnt how to dance to traditional Indian music, using beautiful materials to wave around. They also had a taste of some Indian snacks and enjoyed the different flavours and textures.
The children have also been making super-tato’s and carrots and thinking about what superpower they would have if they were a superhero. These varied from having the ability to trap people in bubbles to being able to fly. The children used their imagination and creativity to design their own superhero costumes and masks. They also practised their superhero poses and skills in the garden.
The Ladybirds were very lucky to have a wonderful morning out at Wilde Woods, where the children explored a variety of exciting construction themed activities such as hammering, vehicle transportation, wall building and hand drilling as well as spending time swinging, climbing and sliding. They also learned about the wildlife and plants that live in the forest and how to take care of them. The children had a fantastic time and came back with big smiles and muddy clothes.
