The Dragonflies have had a great first week back for the last half term of the academic year! They began the week by reading ‘What the Ladybird Heard.’

They also received a letter from the Sparkford police explaining that the two thieves from the story escaped, but not to worry as the Dragonflies were on the case! The children created wanted posters by drawing the thieves from the story and even labelled their pictures with words and simple sentences to describe the characters. After helping the police, the Dragonflies used their agility skills to complete an obstacle course in the nursery garden. They used their imagination to pretend they were on the farm in the story and had to make their way carefully avoiding obstacles on the way. The Dragonflies continued to develop their number skills when making ladybird biscuits this week. They practised matching numeral and quantity when adding chocolate chips onto their biscuit to represent the spots on the ladybirds’ wings. Finally, the Dragonflies finished the week with a fantastic and educational trip to Fairfield Animal Centre, where the children had the opportunity to learn about a range of farm animals and even got to feed them!

There was a mystery to solve at the beginning of the week as the Butterflies and Ladybirds tiptoed into the woods. There were three broken houses, but who had broken them and where were they now? The children followed a trail of odd footprints to discover a very bad wolf, hiding in the tree.

They thought of ways to get him down from the tree including shaking the tree, trying to catch him with rope and asking the teachers to get him down. Unfortunately, he was a bit snappy, so in the end we caught him in a huge trap! The children then cooked up a wolf stew in the mud kitchen and helped the Three Little Pigs to rebuild their houses. After all that work, it was time for a snack of toasted pancakes, decorated with fruit to make them look like pigs!

The rest of the week has been full of story-telling, pig themed crafts and not forgetting a parachuting pig experiment!

The children also investigated wind power, using various wind powered objects to represent the big bad wolf and blow down those houses!

The week was completed with a wonderful trip to Fairfield Farm where we were able to get close to some real-life pigs as well as many other cute and cuddly farm animals!
