Nursery Enjoy a Picnic on the Moon and Learn Why Pirates Love Underpants
The Dragonflies have had a fun-filled week based on the story ‘Pirates Love Underpants.’ At the beginning of the week, the children used dice and played a pirate number track game.
The children took it in turns rolling the dice and moving their pirate characters along the number track to reach the underpants in the treasure chest. On Tuesday, we looked at the journey the pirates in the story had to take to reach the golden underpants and thought that they might be hungry. The Dragonflies were able to follow a set of instructions to be able to decorate a biscuit to create a delicious pirate snack. Instead of giving the biscuits to the pirates, the children gobbled them all up! Therefore, the children had to help the pirates make their own pirate snacks. They did this by creating their own set of instructions by correctly sequencing pictures of the process and labelling their pictures with initial sounds, words and sentences.
We've had an exciting week in Nursery, as the children became 'star gazers'. After reading the stories 'My Pet Star' and 'How to Catch a Star' the children began an important mission to fish for stars that had fallen from space. The Butterflies caught them and sorted them into coloured pots and the Ladybirds had to practice their careful counting, adding the correct number of stars into the numbered cups. Next, the Butterflies created some beautiful night sky sensory bottles, developing their gross and fine motor skills through pouring and picking up tiny sequins to place inside. They thought carefully about the things that they see in the sky, at night time.
All the children then created their own pet stars, ensuring they were sparkly and bright, ready to zoom back off to space.
As our space topic came to a close, the children were finally ready to embark on a space adventure of their own! Armed with homemade telescopes, honey and jam sandwiches and iced planet biscuits, we counted down from ten and zoomed off to the moon. The children were in awe as they spotted planets, stars and the beautiful colours of the galaxies in space.
