Nursery Discovers the Northern Lights
The Dragonflies’ week began with an exciting visit from their parents for the stay-and-play session. The Dragonflies learnt about repeating patterns and created a repeating pattern wand with the help of their parents.
The children then spent the day turning their friends into frogs and casting spells in the classroom. Later on in the week, the children explored Norway. They first looked at where Norway was on a map and spoke about how we could travel there. They then explored the northern lights and watched a video of how the lights danced in the sky. Following on from this, the children created their own Northern Lights picture using chalk pastels. The children smudge the chalk pastels to mimic the lights glowing and dancing in the sky. To finish off the week, they found Arendelle and the frozen characters stuck and frozen in ice! The Dragonflies worked together to experiment with how to save Elsa and Anna, we found that warm water worked best to melt the ice!
This week the Butterflies and Ladybirds were thrilled to have their Mummies and Daddies join them for a morning of Forest School. The woods were a hive of activity as everyone engaged in bird-related activities, such as: making pizzas for the birds, bird nest building and using a drill to create a bird medallion. It was wonderful to spend time all together and a lovely morning was had by all.
In the classroom, the children have been finding out about Polar bears and the Northern lights. They have explored the beautiful colours of the Northern lights, through art and messy play, using a variety of senses along the way. The Ladybirds have created some beautiful Northern scenes using oil pastels and learnt the skill of smudging. They then chose a variety of materials to create a polar bear, discussing the textures used to complete their wintery, Northern scene.
The Butterflies used their hands and feet to explore coloured textured paints, they practiced their 'magic marker' movements to spread the paint and we talked about the colours used, some of the children experimented by colour mixing. The children have also explored the beautiful colours in the bubbly watery tray and gloopy cornflour!
