This week the Dragonflies were transported to Greenland where they experienced a snowstorm.

Cotton wool balls were flying across the classroom, whilst a gust of wind from a fan blew in their faces. This generated lots of laughter and enabled the children to experience how the characters in the story ‘The Big Fuzzy’ were feeling as they travelled through the snowstorm. The children explored some facts about polar bears and described what one would feel like. The children came up with some great adjectives, such as, soft, fuzzy, fluffy and big! The Dragonflies then chose a soft material to collage their own a polar bear. The artistic skills did not stop there this week, the children also used watercolours for the first time to create an artic background for their polar bear picture.

The Dragonflies are continuing to develop their counting skills through games and songs. This week, the children helped the characters in the story to travel home through the snowstorm by counting and moving them along the number track.

This week the resident penguin in the Ladybird and Butterfly room laid an egg! This was very exciting and sparked us into thinking about which other animals come from eggs. The Ladybirds have been busy designing their own eggs from salt dough. They all thought of a different animal such as crocodiles, penguins and barn owls, that would hatch from eggs.

Towards the end of the week, they picked out some materials to make a nest, keeping the eggs cosy and warm. The Butterflies discovered some coloured eggs hidden in a nest, they thought about what could be hiding inside and then organised them into colours and sizes. They then used paint and different tools to make their own patterned eggs.

At the end of the week, the children carried out a science experiment ' Fizzy Eggs!' The children used vinegar in pipettes to melt away the brightly coloured eggshells, they were amazed at all the fizzing bubbles and the animals that emerged from inside them.
