Owl Babies and Bear Hunts in Nursery
All was dark and quiet in the Dragonfly room at the beginning of the week as we listened to the sound of owls hooting at night.
This week we read ‘Owl Babies’ and spoke about the owl family in the story. This encouraged the children to create pictures of their families. Owl Babies were also an inspiration for our maths and artwork. The Dragonflies focused on the number 2 this week. They created their own Owl Baby by painting the body and adding two eyes, feet, ears and wings.
This week, the Ladybirds have been talking about their families. We began the week by looking at different types of families, and during circle time, the children confidently shared who they lived with. In the creative area, they have been painting pictures of their family before using lollipop sticks to build their house.
Later in the week, the children were having many conversations linked to the classic story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.' One morning, some messy trays appeared in the classroom and the children took off their shoes and socks and engaged in a sensory trail bear hunt which led them to a cave belonging to a family of bears. This inspired the children to create their own bears using materials and glue or with playdough, which represented their family at home. This also gave them mathematical opportunities to categorise and explore the language of size. To finish a busy week the children used a range of construction materials to build a cosy home for their chosen small-world family.
