‘All Creatures Great and Small’ was our theme this week with a visit from our very own James Herriot, Mrs Rochford!

The children were involved in ‘diagnosing’ what was wrong with the chickens and hamster she brought, and they then practised their bandaging skills on their own poorly teddies.  Under the professional guidance of Mrs Rochford, they learned how to do a clinical examination and then looked at anatomy models for different animals. The role play vets in the classroom has become a hive of activity following her visit and the children have been undertaking some complicated procedures with the cuddly toys! It is wonderful to see the impact of her visit on the language the children are using in their independent learning time.

Our own pets have inspired our non- fiction writing this week, where the children have made fact files and posters to inform others on how to look after animals. In our class discussions the children have confidently told their friends all about the special animals they have at home and how they care for them.

In other news, the caterpillars are growing fast, and the children cannot wait for them to form chrysalides.
