This week, the Butterflies have been focusing on the story of 'The Little Red Hen'.
When the little red hen asked her animal friends to help her bake the bread, they all answered "No"! However, luckily, the Butterflies were on hand to help out and they demonstrated excellent teamwork and patience whilst baking their bread which was lovely to see. The bread smelt delicious, and the children enjoyed eating it for their snack. Later in the week, the children were given a special task to look after an egg for the morning. In the woods, they found natural materials to create a nest for their egg to keep it cosy and warm until it was ready to hatch. However, they may have just ended up in some hungry children's tummies before they had chance! The children have all been perfecting their very own chicken dance and the sounds of 'Chick, chick, chicken' have been echoing around the classroom all week.
The Ladybirds and Dragonflies have been investigating life cycles this week. They began the week looking at 'The Woolly Caterpillar' by Julia Donaldson and illustrator Yuval Zommer. Crawling through the garden, the little Woolly Bear Caterpillar wonders what kind of moth she will become. Bonny and bright, stunning and smart, but not kind, the other caterpillars laughed at the small, plain Woolly Bear caterpillar. The children thought about how the woolly bear might be feeling and looked carefully at the words in the story and discussed why these are not kind words and whether this is something we should say to friends. The children reflected on themselves and what makes them all different, supporting the children to be curious not only about the people around them but also beyond the Nursery classroom. They thought about people, families and animals who are similar and different. The children thought about how the other caterpillars could have been a little more respectful to the woolly bear caterpillar.
Linking to this lovely story, the children created their own moths or butterflies thinking about different patterns, colours and designs and represented life cycles using resources, working in small groups and engaged in some caterpillar mathematics activities.
