Reception Enjoyed Their 'Dark and Quiet' Themed Week
All was dark and quiet in Reception class this week as we enjoyed a story read by candlelight.
The atmosphere enabled the children to immerse themselves in the story and connect with the characters’ emotions. Feelings such as worried, nervous, anxious, and lonely rose when Baby Bear was in the dark. When the candle was introduced into our dark classroom, the children’s faces lit up, much like the room.
We explored how the light in the darkness made us feel and what we have at home to make us feel safe. This encouraged the children to discuss ways in which we could make Baby Bear feel better in darkness. The children contributed many kind and thoughtful comments to help Baby Bear feel safer. To continue our learning the children created their own lanterns using recycled and natural materials. This brought light to our own classrooms in the darker months. The children had to explore which materials to use to stick the leaves to the baking paper and think about the placement of the leaves to still allow the light to shine through.
