Year 2 Stepped Back in Time to Learn All About Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole
Wow, what amazing sewing has appeared on our special waistcoats this week.
The children still have all their fingers despite a few ‘ouches’ along the way. Many of the children have learnt a new skill and some show the finish of a professional! We are excited and cannot wait to get our colourful designs on them next. Many of the children have a particular Teddy in mind that their waistcoat will fit. Some of the children wanted to try it on their cat but we decided that may not be a very good idea. The cold and wet didn’t dampen the spirits of Year 2 this week. We had a visit from Mr Stok. He shared with us a wealth of knowledge about Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. This knowledge was supported by a multitude of artefacts that were used by the nurses who went to help during the Crimean war. These wonderful artefacts ranged from syringes, soldiers’ uniforms from the 1800s, a field microscope, and many more. We also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges the women who went out there faced. The children realised the smells that came from the hospital wards were awful and that wasn’t the only horror. Rats were often seen scuttling around. We all realised how lucky we were to live in 2024.
