Pre-Prep bring their cycles to school for a charity ride for Safari Simbaz
There were lots of smiling faces as the Pre-Prep cycled for charity raising over £200 for Safari Simbaz!
Hazlegrove parent Nick Bourne, who in 2015 completed a record breaking Cairo to Cape Town cycle ride in just 38 days for World bicycle Relief inspired the children, explaining about the work of David Kinjah one of Africa's most successful cyclists. David has seen huge success in his cycling career which has included mentoring multiple Tour de France winner Chris Frome, captaining the Kenyan National team and winning countless races both in Europe and in Africa. He believes that cycling has given him so much that, for the past 15 years, he has dedicated himself to reducing poverty through the power of the bike. The Safari Simbaz Educational Centre utilises cycling as a means for children in disadvantaged communities in Kenya, to build self-esteem, learn new skills and become empowered with knowledge that can sustain them economically in the future.
Nick created a fun obstacle course on the all-weather pitch for the children to negotiate, including cones to weave in and out of, hurdles to go underneath and even a see-saw for the older children to go over! The more proficient cyclists also followed an exciting cross country trail through the Hazlegrove woods. It was certainly a sight to behold with over 70 children aged 2 ½ to 7 taking part!
A huge thank you to Nick and also to all the parents for bringing the bikes to school.
