Pre-Prep's very own hungry caterpillars

PrePrep

The whole of the Pre-Prep had fun learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.  The Painted Lady caterpillar larvae arrived in the post and there were enough for everyone!

We put the special caterpillar food into little pots and carefully added a tiny caterpillar to each pot. We then watched with amazement as our own very hungry caterpillars grew and grew and grew. They shed their skin several times, spun silk webs and when they were ready attached themselves to the top of the pot, hung upside down and turned into a chrysalis.

We waited patiently for the beautiful butterflies to emerge. We watched them feed on pieces of fruit and nectar from flowers, before releasing them into the Pre-Prep garden, where we spotted them for a few days enjoying the nectar from the many butterfly friendly plants in the garden.

The Reception class have also enjoyed making beautiful bead butterflies and using flour and water to create stunning batik pictures of butterflies.
