A busy weekend for the boarders including a trip to Montacute to watch a falconry display

The children have been on great form this term – they have all been so kind and supportive towards each other and full of enthusiasm for life! This was no more evident than on Saturday evening when we all gathered on the lawn for a BBQ. We all huddled together and enjoyed each other’s company and the delicious food on offer.

Saturday saw the children riding their bikes, rip-sticking, playing football on the Moore, playing games in the woods and a spot of DT. There was also a squash tournament running (thanks to Mr O’Neill and Miss Rudd), supported by badminton and table tennis in the sport’s hall – a great way to start the weekend.

On Sunday morning, after the legendary full-Hazlegrove breakfast we gathered in Fitzjames for letter writing. Then the first group of children went off to watch a falconry display at the impressive Montacute House. Meanwhile at school, some children joined in an Orienteering competition around the school grounds, while others made pom-poms, played pool and baked scones – for our planned afternoon picnic. The pool table was also the scene of Fraser beating me – I must add that we were both going for the 8-ball and my cue was wonky! Until next time…

After a scrumptious roast, we headed back in to the kitchen to make biltong (dried, cured beef) – the children really embraced handling chunks of raw meat and the beef is now hanging to dry and will be ready to take home for the exeat. The kayaks were out in full force in the pool and my soaked shoes tell the story! Den-building and face-painting were popular choices too. The cream tea picnic was a hit – freshly baked scones, cream and tea and bunting made to order, donned the trees on the practice putting green - not sure the golfing purists would have approved but we all had a thoroughly good time!

We finished the day with Chapel, led by Mr Birch, who re-told the story of the calming of the storm – complete with children wearing life-jackets and being squirted with water pistols. It was an inspiring message and a fitting way to end a lovely day and weekend.
