Purple 4 Polio!
On Monday we were delighted to welcome some members of the Brue Valley Rotary Club to our assembly. Jules, Sue, Karen and John came to talk to us about the Purple4Polio campaign.
This is an initiative supported by the Great Britain and Ireland Rotary clubs to raise funds and awareness for End Polio Now. The funds raised by this campaign provided polio vaccinations to children in countries where this is not automatically provided. Thanks to Rotary and the support of other partners such as the Bill and Miranda Gates Foundation, there are now only two countries where cases of polio are being reported.
Our children learnt about how Polio can affect children and how the vaccine is needed. They were fascinated to learn about how the children have their little finger painted with a temporary purple dye to indicate that they have had the vaccine, and many enjoyed dipping their fingers into purple food colouring to share this experience! The Brue Rotary club provided us with a purple crocus bulb for every child in our school, so that they can plant these in the grounds, and recognise this important campaign. Alongside planting the crocuses, when we return from half term, and enjoying their flowering every year, we will be giving a proportion of our collection from the Carol Service to the Rotary club to support them in this work.
