Freddie S Runs for Cornwall Wildlife Trust
Hazlegrove Prep School has a running star in its midst! Freddie S has stacked up an impressive 304.6 miles running the Cornish coast in aid of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
Freddie loves the outdoors and particularly animals having grown up around them. Having started the challenge when he attended school in Cornwall, Freddie was left with over 140 miles to run over the summer holidays following his school move to Hazlegrove. It was a steep challenge and he ran between 14-18 miles a day on three separate occasions and over 33 miles over a 48-hour period, twice! To complete the challenge, it often meant that Freddie and his parents stayed on location overnight and even slept in the back of the car when necessary. Support has come in the form of encouragement from Great Britain Olympians, Paula Radcliffe, Sally Gunnell and Liz McColgan.
Freddie's incredible achievement means that he has run the equivalent of Hampshire to Northumberland and ascended over 45,000 feet not to mention spending more than 80 hours in cars or buses getting to and from runs. Having never done anything like this before, Freddie now has the running bug and it runs in the family too! His younger brother, Max, will run the Dorset coast with Freddie and the Somerset and Devon coasts are to follow. His father, James commented, 'It isn't his miles that have amazed me but rather his quiet determination throughout', meanwhile, Freddie described the challenge as 'Amazing fun, I was very happy to finish it but also very sad that it is over'. Headmaster, Mr Benbow said, ' We are all so proud of Freddie’s achievements. Having seen him thrive at Hazlegrove, particularly on the games field, it came as no surprise that he would make such a success of this challenge'.
