Bog Coats All Round!
Middle School Recycled Fashion Club have been working hard on zero waste approaches to dressmaking.
They spent a busy session using post-it notes to devise a way to create a tiny jacket with the least amount of waste, before looking at the very clever techniques used in bog coats, Iron Age clothing found preserved in bogs. With a bright orange example made for them out of a recycled tablecloth, they were able to see exactly how the coat works, and compare this with Japanese Haori jackets as another alternative way to produce zero waste clothing with a similar approach from an entirely different culture. Scrap fabrics recycled from bed sheets and duvet covers have been cut up for children to make their own coats: who knows what they will make next!
