The Year 7 Science Morning
Pupils took part in different tasks across all three labs. Pupils passed through 'HZG Junior Doctor Training’, carrying out heart dissection, learning about the different parts and their role.
‘Trainees’ watched and followed expert demonstrations from their ‘Senior Surgeon’ (Mr Atkinson), before making their own incisions, completing challenges on a digital assignment to identify different parts and photograph them.
The second activity turned up the heat! An investigation using Bunsen burners to discover which shape container boiled water fastest. This allowed pupils to further develop practical skills and knowledge of fair tests. They also became more confident with understanding how to change the type of flame and which parts of the flames are hottest.
The final area of investigation was the ‘STEM Marble Run Challenge’. Pupils were put into small teams and given a set amount of time to construct a marble run using a fixed number of materials. Their creativity and ingenuity were most impressive; all sorts of wonderful ideas were shared. There was such a wide variety of different models and methods, with some managing to keep the marble rolling for ages, and others… blink and you’d miss it!
It was a morning full of fun! Year 7 pupils left the labs with new knowledge and skills that will be key in their future studies.
