Boarders Had a Lovely Trip to Stourhead
When the going gets tough, the HZG family pulls together. This weekend was yet another example of the caring and supportive spirit in our boarding community.
With COVID cases, flu and a number of sporting events adding to the mix, the children have been faced with a week that could have been unsettling. Instead, the children have been remarkably calm and worth mentioning, kind and supportive.
After a Saturday full of activities on offer, we gathered in the dining hall for a wholesome meal before heading off to “Movie Night” in the Houses. Remembrance Sunday was celebrated in Bruton, with the children joining the town’s parade and service, outside the church. After this moving and poignant service, we headed back to school for a spot of free time and then a delicious roast lunch. After lunch, we piled into the coach and made our way to the stunning Stourhead gardens. The leaves were in full autumnal beauty and the children (and staff!) enjoyed the peaceful afternoon stroll. Before heading back to school, we raided the National Trust kitchen and came out with trays of cream teas – a first for some of our boarders. A warm cup of tea was just what we needed to warm cold little fingers.
Letter writing and a run around the grounds preceded supper. What a day! The walk at Storuhead is hands down, my favourite activity of the year, as it gives me the chance to walk and talk with our boarders, in beautiful surroundings – and today was no exception. I am always left feeling that I have one of the best jobs in the world.
Special mention must be made at this point, to all those boarders, who put time in, to complete their Children in Need Taskmaster Challenges; it is always heart-warming and inspiring to see our children putting love and charity into action.
A special thank you to the Catering Team for a feeding us so royally this weekend. To give you a flavour and insight into the love, care and provision by dedicated kitchen staff, our breakfast menu was: sausages, bacon, hash browns, beans, plum tomatoes, mushrooms, and scrambled eggs; and lunch was: roast beef, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips, carrots, mashed swede, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and a veggie quiche. I bet you wished you could book a table!
