Middle School Maths Morning
On Monday this week our Year 5s and 6s all donned their think caps, and pitted their wits against each other, in the annual Middle School Maths Morning. They were divided into ten mixed ability teams (all named after famous mathematicians) and they spent a very busy and chaotic morning racing between five very different maths activity stations. At the first station they competed in the Mr Potato Head, Head-to-Head maths quiz, which tested them on a wide range of maths topics, starting easy but quickly getting quite difficult. Then they tackled the fiendish Treasure Hunt, which sent them chasing around the whole school trying to find, and then solve, a set of weird maths puzzles. After that it was off to the swimming pool for the Capacity Chaos competition where they had to see just how good they were at estimating (and measuring) the capacity of a wide selection of strange objects – without getting too wet. Then it was Hula Madness, where their aim as well as the mental arithmetic skills were really put to the test. Then, finally, they had to gamble away all their worldly wealth (or 20 one pence pieces) in the series of games of chances at the Probability Fair.
All-in-all, a really super morning. I was thrilled to see just how seriously all the teams took this competition and how hard they all worked to get to grips with each new challenge and earn the most points. However, in the end, team Laplace came second and team Babbage won with an amazing score of 46/50.
Well done mathematicians – a fantastic effort all-round.
