Wells Cathedral Service Collection Donated to Shares
This week, Geoff and Penny Gardner from the charity Shares visited the children in assembly.
At the Wells Cathedral Christmas Service, your kind donations equated to £1120.20 which was chosen to be donated to Shares: Sherborne Area Refugee Support. Geoff and Penny were invited in to receive a cheque from Freddie F and Emily W, and to tell the children more about the charity and how the money will be spent.
Sherborne Area Refugee Support (also known as Shares) was set up in 2017 in response to the global refugee situation. Shares is run by volunteers, and their main activity is to work with the local authority on resettling refugees under the UK government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons' Resettlement scheme. They help to identify suitable homes, and encourage local people to volunteer their support, for example by becoming befrienders and helping with English language tuition. Other activities include raising awareness of the scheme and of wider issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers.
We thank Geoff and Penny for taking the time to come and speak to us.
