On Friday 15th September, Year 8 headed off to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove for a busy day of geography fieldwork.

It was great to get a field trip in so early in the academic year and have our new Year 8s with us.  The weather was unbeatable and possibly the last summery day of 2023!

Firstly, we followed up on our work on coasts, looking at features of erosion, transportation and deposition; there’s nothing like seeing landforms like caves, arches, stacks, stumps, headlands and bays in real life to bring geomorphology to life!

Secondly, we investigated our fieldwork enquiry question: “Is excessive tourist activity damaging the landscape around Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door?”  We collected a wealth of data to help answer this question, from measuring footpath erosion (using tape measures and metre rules) to landscape evaluation surveys.  Pupils designed their own questionnaires beforehand and asked members of the public and carpark attendants their questions.  The next step is to produce graphs on Excel, based on the data we have, and write up our findings.
