Decoding Tudor Portraits in Year 6 History!
As a part of the Year 6 study of the Tudors, the children have been learning about the coded language in Tudor portraiture, with a particular focus on the formal portraits of Elizabeth I.
They have learned about the symbolic use of objects, animals, clothing, jewellery, weather and poses which all combined to give us incredibly rich and descriptive images, telling us so much more than a first glance would suggest.
After using a symbolism dictionary to decode Elizabethan portraits, 6P3 put their learning to good use in our Tudor photobooth, selecting and posing objects in order to communicate a coded message to the viewer. They had a great time and were very creative in the objects they chose and had very clear ideas about the messages they wanted to communicate.
