Year 4 Had A Wonderful Trip To Ufton Court
Getting up early didn’t dampen the Year 4 spirits on Friday. The early rise meant we missed the traffic, we flew past Stonehenge and headed to Ufton Court, an Elizabethan mansion. When we all got there, John, the Tudor sailor was awaiting our arrival and proceeded to explain what the day included and who we were there to study.
First of all, the children had to place the events of Sir Francis Drake in chronological order, learning that he came from nothing, explored the world and almost married Elizabeth I. They then learnt about the jobs of different sailors onboard a Tudor ship, reinforcing what they had learnt in class. It was then time to set sail around the world, in the 5 ships that Sir Francis Drake took and sail around the world. The children then spent time finding out what Drake discovered and took at each point of his circumnavigation of the world. Unlike Drake, all the children returned at the end!
After lunch, the children then plotted on a Tudor map, Drake’s voyage and spent time looking at different Tudor paintings, uncovering the hidden messages in them. So much fun was had by everyone who went on Friday, the children learned so much and were engaged in all that we did. It was a terrific trip and enhanced the learning of the children in our Tudor Explorer topic.
