The Boarders Crack a Murder Mystery!

The Boarders Crack a Murder Mystery!

Prep Boarding

The wet, gloomy morning was made better when the boarders had the very famous cooked breakfast.

This was a first for me, the boarders often talk about Sunday’s being a good day because of the cooked breakfast. After, tummies were full and ready for the day ahead. However, this Sunday it became a day of Mystery as Mr Shaw announces a murder had been committed in the sports hall. His suspicions were on one of the teachers but who, what, where and when was it committed? As the children began to question who may have done it, out came two deliciously looking chocolate cakes, dripping in milk chocolate covered with strawberries dipped in white chocolate. At first, I thought it was a birthday but no it was the prize to the group who solved the murder!!

As the children entered the sports hall, there in the middle of the floor, faced down was a female body. It was not clear if that was where she was murdered or simply placed there to add further confusion. Next the children were placed in groups, given a numbered envelope, clipboard and pencil. Mr Shaw explained that there were many alibis and clues around the school that the children need to gather and piece together who may have committed the murder. With the information and tools needed, the children were set.

Not to give away any information to the groups, the children moved around the school with secrecy and determination, with questions to ask witnesses that were scattered around various buildings. Some of these witnesses were somewhat evasive and vague, some were annoyed to be interrupted from normal weekend activities, such as planning and preparing for another exciting week of lessons. Others wondered why they were being integrated and just wanted to have a peaceful afternoon reading. During this time, the Upper School pupils, were climbing the ‘Three Peaks Stair Summits’ to raise money for BBC Children in Need, then returning a little red faced and puffed out to continue solving clues. A couple of hours went by and it was solved. A dagger was found in the bush outside the Library. The murderer! Who would have thought that Mr Capozzoli would commit such a crime! Super team work, team 7!

After all that problem solving, teamwork and adventuring all over the wonderful grounds. It was time for stomachs to be filled with a tasty chicken roast dinner ready for an afternoon filled with further activities. These activities included dodging lasers in laser tag, some chill time doing crafty things, dusting of those dance moves, and waking up those feet with some funky football. With such an action-packed day the boarders shared time together watching a movie, eating popcorn and drinking some hot chocolate.

What I find so heart-warming about all the children at Hazlegrove is their willingness, excitement, and eagerness to embrace any challenge that is put in front of them. And the love and care they give to each other when times get a little tough. This really shone out in today’s activities.
