Year 8 Take On Everest Virtually for Charity

Prep Charity

Year 8 are taking on a huge challenge to raise money for NHS Charities Together and Serve On.

Year 8 pupils and even some of their families are taking part in a Virtual Climb of Everest from 14 – 22 May, ‘trekking’ and ‘climbing’ from Lukla Airport to the summit, by using stairs, steps, ladders and hills.

Around this time of the year, the Year 8 pupils would usually be planning their annual charity fete; we are taking this opportunity to do a different one-off exciting event as our remote learning alternative, and creating an extra chance for the year group to stay connected and complete their first Leavers’ Project together.

Serve On is a humanitarian response charity based in Salisbury. It was set up to give new purpose to former military personnel. They have created highly-trained rescue teams – like the International Response Team (IRT), Community Resilience Teams (CRTs), Rescue Rookies and Dog Rescue Team, and mentor young, marginalised or disadvantaged members of their community. They are currently running food banks, checking on the vulnerable, delivering PPE, food and medication. We are proud to say one of our Hazlegrove parents is a volunteer.

NHS Charities Together is the umbrella for all the NHS charities and their effort at present is largely towards COVID-19.

There are some solo summit attempts, including Mrs Mahony and Miss Rudd, some two-person teams, and some larger teams of pupils, all of whom will be completing climbs daily to scale Mount Everest. The aim is to ‘summit’ together on the evening of Friday 22 May.

Keep up to date with the challenge via the @HZG_Adventures twitter account and if you would like to donate, please visit our Virgin Money giving page.
