Lower School Get Stuck into Maths Morning
On Monday, with the gorgeous sun radiating down on us, the Lower School paused their normal programme of lessons and instead spent the whole morning exploring maths in a wide variety of fun and practical contexts.
They were divided up into ten mixed ability teams, each named after famous mathematicians, and then, as teams, moved between five maths activity stations set up around the school. First they searched for maths clues on the Treasure Hunt, then were taxed and stretched in Estimation Agony, followed by a race against the clock in a game of Batty Bingo. After that they worked on the measuring and averaging at the Welly Tossing station and finally were challenged with a series of capacity conundrums in Wild Waters. Each activity was designed to help them recognise and appreciate the real world value and the significance of the topics that have been learning in their various maths classes – whilst also hopefully presenting maths in an engaging way.
By lunch time their heads where certainly spinning from all the maths but they did extremely well and I was very proud of them. In the end Team Lagrange and Team Laplace came tie for first place with a terrific score of 45.5 out of 50.
