Pupils Become Forensic Scientists at Bryanston
On Tuesday this week a group of eight pupils travelled to Bryanston School to take part in a day that was ‘all things science’.
The day began with Bryanston science staff debating and promoting their nominee for ‘The Organism of the Month’. The choices were the mimic octopus, a fungus that decomposes plastic, the three-toed sloth, the banana plant and bacteria of the gut. The winning organism was judged through the ‘clapometer’- and this month’s winner was the three-toed sloth...but who would get your vote?
We were treated to a wonderful lunch before the afternoon activities commenced. This was based around solving a fictional crime- a Nobel Prize being stolen. Our pupils put their practical skills into action by conducting tests on ‘evidence’ involving skills such as flame tests, sugar tests on samples from cups of tea, comparing hair samples under the microscope and taking fingerprints.
The results of the tests provided a degree of confidence that the culprit was none other than a Tom Riddle!
A great day was had by all and our Forensic Scientists have returned to school with some memories they will treasure.
