World Book Day 2024
The 7 March 2024 faced Hazlegrove Prep School with a challenging question. How could we celebrate World Book Day without dressing up?
Being a little more creative, harnessing the staff and the children’s enthusiasm for books, and using their imagination as fuel, we introduced several exciting activities and initiatives that would help us to celebrate the beauty of books and reading.
The start of the day saw children arriving in the front hall with their “Book Gardens” – intricately crafted and beautifully designed gardens, nestled into the pages of a book. The results were stunning.
The Library, was abuzz with children reading and completing a Quiz – where they tried to match their teachers with their favourite books. Not an easy task at all! Another exciting initiative in the Library, started a few weeks ago, where the children were tasked to design their own bookmark – the best ones will be printed off and used in the Library throughout the year.
Renowned, local illustrator, Emma van Zeller – whose work you may know from visiting “The Newt”, treated the children with workshops in our Art room. They were absolutely enthralled by her creativity and skill; and she guided them along their own artistic journey, by creating incredible water colours of their own.
Lunch was a feast for the eyes. The Catering team were set the challenge of creating a menu, inspired by the recipes and food of Roald Dahl. This challenge ignited the catering team beyond our wildest expectations – the results were nothing short of breathtaking. What a spread!
We also collected books, which will be donated to the worthwhile charity, “The Children’s Book Project”.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, encouraging young people to discover the pleasure of reading; we feel that today we embraced their dream and vision brilliantly. Thank you everyone for your efforts and capturing the essence and magic of reading and books.
