Year 4 have recently visited Ufton Court
On Friday, the Year 4s had an early start and headed off to Ufton Court for a day of being Tudor Explorers.
After some wonderful singing on the coach and a quick snack, we arrived in great spirits ready for our busy and exciting day ahead. Our first activity involved organising and putting all the important events of Sir Francis Drake’s life in order from birth to death. We had to use our Maths skills to order some tricky dates. We then focused on the key years of his life when he circumnavigated the world under orders from Queen Elizabeth I. The children enjoyed dressing up in character with waistcoats, eye patches and beards! We then had great fun acting out the different jobs of the ship's crew members.
In groups we made our own sails and re-enacted the treacherous voyage across the seas as well as visiting different continents along the way. At each stop we collected different items such as silk from Asia and cocoa beans from South America. We then brought them aboard our ships to take back to England.
After our lunch and play, the afternoon was spent reviewing our treasure and locating different countries on the world map. It was interesting to reflect on how many of the things we enjoy today, come from all across the world.
We then spent time analysing different portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Francis Drake and noticed we could learn a lot about a figure in history from what they included in their portraits.
Following this, Year 4 were given the challenge of making quills out of feathers as well as our own ink all made out of natural resources- Year 4 were so pleased they no longer have to use quills anymore!
We ended our day by considering the big question… Was Sir Francis Drake really a hero or a villain? We are looking forward to continuing our work all about Tudor Explorers over the next few weeks.
Thank you to all the staff who made the trip possible!
