The newly christened Wilson Centre plaque is officially unveiled!
It was a pleasure to welcome back gold medallist and Old Hazlegrovian, Peter Wilson to open the Wilson Centre, our LSU Department. Peter joined us to unveil the plaque placed in his honour created by the talented stone engraver and fellow Old Hazlegrovian Toby Newton.
Mr and Mrs Benbow welcomed Peter and his parents along with Governor, Christopher Birrell and his wife to the school to showcase the wonderful Fitzjames building where our LSU Wilson Centre is now housed.
Susan Cranfield, who was Peter’s LSU teacher during his time with Hazlegrove, provided an uplifting speech saying ‘I am so proud of Peter, our golden boy with his golden post-box, and Toby our oh-so-talented stone carver. I am also so proud of all the other pupils who have passed through this Department and who have gone on to have such a diverse range of successful degrees and careers.’
We couldn’t let Peter leave without sharing some valuable words of encouragement with our pupils and surprising them with a close-up of his winning 2012 Gold Olympic medal. Mr Benbow shared these words ‘Peter gave a moving and inspiring talk to a lot of our pupils and staff, all of whom got to see his medal, too! We look forward to welcoming him back to our speech day in July’. With special thanks to our current LSU staff for carrying on the wonderful work that Hazlegrove provide in their newly christened Wilson Centre.
