Year 6 Mathematicians Take On The Bryanston Maths Challenge!
Last Thursday four marvellous mathematicians set out to compete in the prestigious Bryanston Maths Challenge. The maths challenge has taken place for the past 15 years and Hazlegrove has always been competitive when it comes to the maths arena. The four pupils had battled it out with their classmates over the previous term to win the honour of representing the school.
The pupils competed in pairs against 48 other teams from over 20 schools from around the surrounding area. The children competed in three very difficult challenges over a two-hour period. The teams solved problems where accuracy and teamwork were paramount to gaining high marks.
Both Hazlegrove teams performed admirably and most importantly had a lot of fun. It was a wonderful afternoon seeing the children throw themselves into every challenge with a smile on their faces. I am very proud of both teams who came 5th and 19th which is extremely impressive given the number of competitors and the level of difficulty. We had a brilliant day and we look forward to pushing ourselves next year to see if we can break into the top 3.
To give you a flavour of the difficulty I encourage you all to have a go at the below challenges:

The final challenge was a mixed question challenging their application of the maths they have been taught:
A household has some goldfish, some canaries and rabbits. Altogether there are 15 heads and 26 legs. How many of each animal could there be?
