Prep science

On Tuesday this week, our Year 6’s dived into a world of Engineering.

Throughout the day classes took part in Robotics Workshops where they discovered more about what robots are, how they work and how they are used in the world. Year 6 pupils stepped up to the task of building their own moving robot to pass through a sequence of different challenges.

In recent science lessons, Year 6 have started to learn about forces and knowledge of circuits will be vital as they head towards their next topic; ‘Electricity’. This workshop encouraged pupils to bring together a range of STEM, electronic, and problem-solving skills to program a robot with the ability to navigate through a room, avoiding obstacles along the way. Robots took the theme of Mars rovers with the mission of collecting a stranded magnetic astronaut. It was fascinating to see the future Engineers, Computer Programmers and Scientists in action. Ingenious solutions were being banded around and I am pleased to say that not too many astronauts were left on Mars!

It was a day packed full of fun! There was such a buzz in the Dining Hall at lunch with many discussing which challenge or ‘level’ they got up to, or how many commands they managed to code for the robot. For many, it was an opportunity to exercise their skill in coding and Engineering, but for some, it was a realization of a new passion.
