It's Hands On History For Year 7 Scholars This Week!
The Year 7 Scholars have been examining leadership and conflict and have begun their focus study on the Battle of Britain with artefact exploration of WW2 objects from the Battle of Britain itself, RAF, and Blitz. They are working on creating a resource sheet, illustrated by their own images of the artefacts.
They were particularly interested in seeing the differences between WW2 technology and equivalent tech today. We discussed how WW2 was the first conflict in which live communication was possible between combatants and ground command and compared our modern headphone jacks with the huge jack on the communication cable, which connected an RAF pilot’s helmet with his aircraft’s radio connection to the ground. We dressed in a Battle of Britain RAF flying jacket, peered through flying goggles, scanned the sky through Air Ministry binoculars and wore a WW2 warden’s helmet to stay on the alert for an attack.
