On the first weekend of half term 49 HZG athletes gathered at Bath University for the 2021 National Schools Biathlon Finals.  All of whom had qualified for this prestigious event having taken part in time trials at HZG earlier in the year.

The girls competed on the Saturday and the boys on the Sunday.

It was a very early start with 7am registrations at the venue for some age groups and throughout the days the athletes all took part in a run and a swim – the distances of which all depended on their age.

We were so delighted to have so many competing in this wonderful event and all of our athletes did so well.  Many personal bests were achieved over the weekend. In some age groups there were over 200 competitors who had travelled from all corners of the UK.  We were thrilled to pick up a number of awards both individually and as school teams; winning medals is always great but the camaraderie and support shown amongst our athletes was brilliant.  To be able to compete at Bath University was a treat, the facilities there are superb and it was incredible throughout the weekend to meet a number of Olympic Modern pentathletes.  Some who had just returned from Tokyo.  The boys were thrilled to be able to meet two GB Olympic gold medallists on the Sunday – Kate French and Joe Cheung – who proudly showed the biathletes their superb gold medals.  Qualifying for the 2022 event is well underway and we have the South West event in two weekends time. If you would like to get involved, please do contact the PE department at HZG who will be able to help – time trials are being held later this term at school.

A huge thank you to the parents and staff who supported this event – it was very special to see our athletes achieving so much and relishing the opportunity to take part in a National event.
