A Glorious In Weekend for Hazlegrove Boarders
Sunshine, full boarding houses and an open school – just a few of the things that were no doubt on many wish lists for the Summer term.
But at Hazlegrove, we dream and think big, so we added smiles, laughter, fellowships, yummy food and exciting activities to the list too. And this weekend, our first weekend all-together since December, didn’t fail to deliver.
Saturday evening saw the return of supper on the lawn with a BBQ. Our newly-appointed boarding monitors received their badges from Mr White, and the boarding community joined together to congratulate Jeremiah, Freddie, Emily and Grace.
After supper, the children dived into their tuck drawers and then enjoyed Movie Night together, in their Houses.
On Sunday, the kitchen staff spoiled us royally, with a full English breakfast. Chapel, led by Mr Shaw, was as always, inspiring and provided plenty of food for thought – and challenged the children, amongst other things, to be brave.
We started the day’s activities by being placed into teams. The plan for the morning was for the children to take part in a series of team challenges. The children were divided into groups with the Year 8s leading their teams. They thoroughly enjoyed the array of activities which included: using spaghetti and marshmallows to create structures, juggling, dancing, an egg challenge, football shooting and bomb disposals. This took us up to lunch…a scrumptious beef roast.
After lunch, we all stretched out on the lawn and enjoyed a spot of reading in the sunshine. After rest, the Year 8s went on a walk whilst the others headed off into the woods to light fires, splash around in the pool, and some dabbled in drama, football or pilates; and the cricket nets were filled with enthusiastic cricketers.
Letter writing followed the afternoon’s activities, and after this, we all headed back to the Houses for a late-afternoon film with popcorn.
A BBQ on the lawn, popcorn and movies, yummy meals, fun activities, glorious sunshine and the key ingredient, friends…all the makings of a cracking weekend together and everything one would expect of boarding at Hazlegrove.
The children were all fantastic company and it was heart-warming to see them all looking after each other, engage and re-connect the way that they did; a super way to start the Summer term.
