Sculpture Workshop Takes Art Out of the Classroom

Sculpture Workshop Takes Art Out of the Classroom

Prep art and dt

This week we had the pleasure of hosting visiting artist James Ort. James is based out of the Phoenix Studios in Oxford. He uses both clay and wire to make his incredible three-dimensional work.

The selected pupils had a full day workshop in which they all learnt about creating sculpture from wire. Throughout the day, the pupils created a human form from wire, using their knowledge of human proportions and muscle groupings. The individual wire creations made by the pupils were then arranged in one large group sculpture. Each pupil decided how they wanted their creation to interact with the whole. With the human form and human endeavour at the forefront of the brief, the whole sculpture aims to serve as a reminder of how we need to live in harmony and help each other. This is represented in the various forms helping each other scale the heights of the structure. As the sculpture ages it will change as the bare wire will rust, they are already changing in colour and it will only keep getting better with age.

This new outdoor sculpture is placed just outside the art room to act as inspiration to all the children that create art in the room. The splendid view from the art room is only further enhanced with this truly remarkable sculpture. All the children involved should be extremely proud of what they created and that they will have left an artistic legacy at Hazlegrove for many years to come.

A big thank you to Miss Collings for helping on her day off and to James for visiting us and hosting the amazing workshop.
