Prep Maths

On Monday morning, with the sun shining gloriously down, all of the children in Year 5 and 6 quickly got stuck into the eagerly awaited Middle School Maths Morning.

This is a maths activity morning designed to emphasise some of the key mathematical concepts within syllabus, presented in a fun and engaging framework. All the children were divided into ten mixed ability teams and they spent the whole morning racing between the Probability Fair, where they gambled away their inheritance (or at least 20p in 1p pieces), then on to Hula Hoop Madness where they tested their bean bag throwing skills as well as their grasp of the four main mathematical operations. Then it was on to the swimming pool where they were challenged to estimate and then measure the capacity of a selection of very unusual shapes in Capacity Chaos. Next was a superb Treasure Hunt in which each of the clues were disguised as a maths problem. Then, finally, they battled against each other as they raced through a series of tricky word problems in the Mr Potato Head Head-to-Head competition.

So, all-in-all it was a really busy and challenging programme of maths throughout the morning and I was thrilled to see the sensible and competitive way they all concentrated and engaged with the tasks, working really hard right through to lunch.

All of the children did their best but, in the end, it was team Cauchy (named after a famous French mathematician, engineer, and physicist who made pioneering contributions to several branches of mathematics, including mathematical analysis and continuum mechanics) that won.
