8S organise a fantastic French Fair
As one of their post-Scholarship challenges, 8S pupils put together a ‘French event’ for Years 4, 6 and 7, their challenge being to come up with original, interesting ideas that had some link to French culture and which could involve using some French language.
They decided, very ambitiously, to have an entry point with passports, run a small cinema with animations from a French film school, staff a French café with bunting they had made themselves and refreshments which would have to be ordered in French, create a photo booth, paint a choice of moustaches on their customers, and manage a range of competitions. These included slow bicycle races as a ‘nod’ to the ‘Tour’ with the contestants in stripey T-shirts and berets, crêpe decorating, paper frog decorating and racing, a garlic shy and a French vocabulary quiz, failure in which was almost inevitable and involved a trip to the guillotine.
As the focus of their event, the guillotine had been made in DT lessons and tried out on a willing volunteer to ensure the descending blade did pierce the water balloon correctly and soak the victim, and proved a great crowd-pleaser, as its famous ancestor did. It was no mean feat to achieve so much in one afternoon with such originality and the pupils in Years 4, 6 and 7 certainly the event. 8S capped it off with quite the most outstanding clearing-up effort, completed in record time. Well done!
