Last week Hazlegrove welcomed Luke Simon, founder of local charity ‘School in a Bag’, to launch a whole school M.A.D. (Making a Difference) initiative to make a significant difference to the lives of children in Nepal following the devastating earthquake. Every child in the school has been challenged to raise a minimum of £15.00 before the end of half-term. This will cover the cost of one rucksack full of stationery and resources aimed at poor, orphaned, vulnerable and disaster affected children in Nepal.

The local charity ‘School in a Bag’ has been chosen by Hazlegrove as it has strong links with people on the ground in Nepal, able to assist with guaranteed delivery of these rucksacks. These bags offer hope to children desperately in need of education and a brighter future. Being able to express themselves on paper can help rehabilitate them from the horrendous scenes they have had to witness. The charity was set up by Luke Simon in memory of his brother Piers who so sadly died in the Tsunami in Thailand in 2004, just weeks after he had spent the summer at Hazlegrove setting out the formal gardens at the front of the school, restoring them to their original historic layout.

The children were clearly fired up after listening to Luke and were clearly keen to do all they could to help. By getting every child who successfully raises £15.00 to pack the bag themselves, Hazlegrove children will see the real power of thinking beyond themselves and the end result of their fundraising.

You can download a Gift Aid form here and we have set up an online form for you to send us evidence and photographs of the children earning the money should you wish to share this with us!

Last term Mr Fenwick urged the school community to go M.A.D (to make a difference), encouraging them to consider others before themselves, to do some random acts of kindness, and to think beyond the school gates and consider those less fortunate than ourselves on a global scale. The children have already been busy going M.A.D. thinking up their own initiatives and 'School in a Bag' gives Hazlegrove the chance to make a significant difference by sending up to 390 rucksacks out to Nepal.
