Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a really exciting morning of active maths.
On Monday the 18 September ‘normal service’ was interrupted in Year 5 and 6 as the children spent the morning fully invested in five fiendish maths challenge activities.
At each maths station around the school they worked in small groups to pit their collective wits against a broad selection of diverse real-world (and some very unworldly) maths problems. They tried to calculate the volume of some very leaky shapes, they battled with Mr Potato Head through some tough maths story sums, they tested their luck at the Probability Fair, they aimed for glory at the hula hoop ‘BIDMAS’ challenge and let’s not forget the crazy maths treasure hunt which saw them racing around the school searching for maths clues.
All-in-all a lovely morning and the weather was uncharacteristically kind which helped to keep the children focused for nearly four hours of stretching maths. The competition was very close, as it always is, but in the end team Babbage (named after the famous mathematician and philosopher) came out on top.
A really exciting morning of active maths.
