Bryanston Maths Challenge
On Thursday the 19th of January four intrepid young mathematicians from Year 6 travelled across to Bryanston to compete in the Bryanston Maths Challenge.
The four ambassadors from Hazlegrove divided into two teams one in the Hexagon section and one in the Nonagon section. The competition involved three gruelling maths puzzles; the first event was called ‘Find the Value’ and it involved solving, by process of elimination, a series of algebra problems and correctly identifying all the mystery values. The second event was an adaption of the popular ‘Countdown’ maths game where they are required to manipulate a series of given numbers to reach a specific target number. The final competition was called the ‘Big Event’ and it involved the children battling through a series of progressively more difficult word problems covering the entire Year 6 maths syllabus and beyond.
All-in-all, it was a long afternoon of tricky maths but both teams worked incredibly hard and I was extremely pleased with their performance. However, it was the girls who triumphed in the end ultimately coming 3rd out of 28 teams entered in their section.
