A group of Year 7s enjoy Cracking the Code in Sherborne
Yesterday, seven eager Year 7s travelled the short distance to Sherborne to compete in the “Cracking the Code” challenge jointly hosted by Sherborne Girls and Sherborne School. The day was targeted at gifted and talented pupils and was divided into four very different academic activities.
At the first station they battled through a series of maths puzzles designed to expand and deepen their understanding of angles and algebra, at the second station they were shown how to isolate the DNA strand of a Kiwi. Wearing the very fetching green aprons and protective glasses they all really looked like chemistry professors hard at work. At the third station they had to answer some thought-provoking questions about the use of symbols in the early Christian church and at the final station they explored and attempted to master some basic phrases in either Irish or Polish - through a very clever process of careful observation, logic and elimination.
All-in-all an inspiring and very busy day, taking the children well outside of their comfort zones and making them think along entirely new lines. They all rose to the challenge superbly, worked terribly hard and learnt a tremendous amount.
