Academic Maths

Yesterday, it was Middle School Maths Morning at Hazlegrove. All of Year 5 and 6 were divided into ten mixed ability teams to compete in action packed morning of mathematical challenges aimed at contextualizing, in a fun and active format, what they have been working hard to master in class.

The teams, named after famous mathematicians, moved between five activity stations and were awarded points depending on their focus and application, as well as their general team work and problem solving skills. They searched for treasure with compasses and click wheels in the “Orienteering” challenge, they then tested their skills at estimation in the “Estimation Agony” challenge, they went a little batty playing “Batty Bingo”, they then carefully weighed and measured all the ingredients for their tasty drop scones in the “Chaos in the Kitchen” challenge and finally they battled through a series of water-based capacity problems beside the school swimming pool in “Water Torture”.

All in a very busy but highly enjoyable morning of maths for everyone and I was thoroughly delighted by the children’s attitude, perseverance and team spirit.

In the end it was team Isaac Newton who triumphed – well done everyone.
