Mathematical fun for the Lower School

On Monday we were all determined not to let the blustery and damp morning dampen our spirits in Year 3 and 4 because it was the eagerly awaited annual Lower School Maths Morning. The children were divided into ten mixed ability teams (each named after a famous mathematician) and they spent the whole morning racing around the school competing in five very different fun maths activities – designed to contextualize and extend the concepts they have been learning in class.

Beside the swimming pool they pitted their wits against a series of whacky capacity puzzles, in Mrs Milne’s classroom they battled through a 20 really tricky estimation challenges, in Mrs Sharp’s classroom they played Batty Bingo and for the rest of morning they were either searching for maths clues on the maths treasure hunt or using their iPads to snap sneaky pictures of different shapes around the school as part of the crazy shape chase.

All-in-all, it was a very busy morning of maths for all of the children but I was thrilled to see how hard they were all working and how focused they were on each new challenge.

In the end is was team Laplace that came 1st but every single child seemed to have great deal of fun and they certainly did their very best.
