Year 4 Victorian Day
Hazlegrove Year 4 children embarked on a Victorian adventure as they were transported back to an old fashioned Victorian classroom, full of artefacts, chalk boards, unusual wooden games, and uncomfortable wooden benches. They faced challenging lessons covering everything from ‘recitation’ to the properties and function of an apple, numeracy, marching drill and perfecting their swirling Victorian Copperplate handwriting.
In the afternoon, back in the 21st century, the children had a marvellous time trying to imagine the purpose of various Victorian inventions and even had a go sketching some of them. The vicious clamping teeth of the rat trap, and the electric shock machine were real highlights.
Here are a couple of comments from the children
“Amazing fun! Some parts were funny but some were very interesting and exciting! I’d absolutely love to do it again! I really enjoyed writing with quills and being told about all the lessons the Victorians were taught. Although I enjoyed the day, I would hate to be a Victorian scholar.” Olive N
“Year 4 learnt what a school day was like and had a lot of fun taking part in the school day. We learnt some old fashioned words and how a steam train worked. Some of us dressed up as the rich, others were poor but we all had fun being Victorian children. My favourite part was going to school and being a scholar, writing on slate, handwriting and being a poor girl!” Honor B-G
